Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running winners at 6f on dirt. On the turf course, two front runners won at 5f, a midpack stalker scored at 11f, and a front runner captured the 8f finale (rail at 24 feet).

Two turf wins for Umberto Rispoli.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 7-28-22

Fleet Treat (7f): This one was a treat to watch. My best bet top choice Fun to Dream ($4.20) stalked the pace, took over while racing wide, and powered away to win by 9+ for Juan Hernandez and Bob Baffert. Rose Dawson got stuck inside from the rail post and was second best in an okay effort. Connie Swingle had early trouble and was well clear of the rest in 3rd. Tam’s Little Angel, Opening Buzz, and Gianna’s Wild Cat also ran. The winner completed seven panels in 1:22.67.

July 28 Claims: Race 1 – Bochombo ($50k, Kristin Mulhall). Race 2 – Family Biz ($8k, Doug O’Neill), Little Demon ($8k, Jamey Thomas), Lookin for Revenge ($8k, Steve Knapp), Outright ($8k, Steve Miyadi), Paint Me Lucky ($8k, Jonathan Wong). Race 3 – Cross Examine ($20k, Angela Aquino). Race 4 – Biarritz ($40k, John Sadler), Lincoln City ($40k, Peter Miller), Maven ($40k, Ryan Hanson).

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $152,145, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $6,586.66. The jackpot carryover stands at $235,544.

Del Mar Recap for Friday (7-29-22)

Fast main track and firm turf course. One dueling front running winner at 5f on dirt. On the turf course, a midpack closer scored as the favorite at 8f, a front running 27-1 longshot graduated at 8f, and a dueling front runner captured the Daisycutter Handicap at 5f (rail at 24 feet).

Juan Hernandez booted home a pair. Andy Mathis saddled two winners.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 7-29-22

Daisycutter Handicap (5T): Twilight Gleaming ($4.80) dueled with Leggs Galore, wrestled away a short lead in the stretch, and held off 29-1 closer Xmas Surprise to score by a 1/2 length. Leggs Galore lost the runner-up spot late and was followed by Havana Love (IRE), She’s So Nice (IRE), and Sadie Bluegrass. The final time for this abbreviated turf sprint was 56.90.

Del Mar Recap for Saturday (7-30-22)

Fast main track and firm turf course. No front running winners on dirt. There were six races on the main track and every winner was running in an outside lane. Definitely an outside bias on Saturday but not a closers bias. All of the winners were early-pressing types. On the turf course, a closing favorite graduated at 8f, a 5-1 front runner earned his diploma at 8.5f, an 8-1 closer tallied at 5f, a front runner set strong fractions and kept on going at one mile, and a 5-1 closer won for the first time in the MSW finale at 8f (rail at 12 feet).

Ramon Vazquez guided home a pair of winners on turf. Joe Bravo and George Papaprodromou teamed up for two wins including the G1 Bing Crosby with American Theorem. Phil D’Amato and Richard Mandella both saddled two winners.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 7-30-22

Bing Crosby (G1): Drain the Clock got out there early and Shaaz came after him after a slow start inside. After that, multiple horses were on or very near the early lead in a mad scramble around the turn, and American Theorem ($17.60) emerged wide, took over, and scored by a length and a half over late runner Get Her Number. The latter rallied wide and followed the winner home in a clear place finish. Letsgetlucky stalked and held 3rd, and was followed by Shaaz, Principe Carlo, Drain the Clock, Diamond Oops, Bagboss, and Howbeit. Shaaz got the worst of it from the inside and is worth playing back. The winning time for 6f was 1:08.67.

San Diego Handicap (G2): Stilleto Boy had the best beginning and was in front early, but Defunded from post 2 wanted the front end and got it along the inside through a quarter in 23.71, a half in 47.44, and six panels in 1:11.19. The first two internal fractions were 23.73 and 23.75, and Defunded was just going too fast and taking too much pressure from Stiletto Boy, Country Grammer, and Royal Ship (BRZ). The latter pair were widest on a day that outside lanes were clearly best. Country Grammer and Royal Ship ($21.00) pushed away, and the latter got clear late and scored by 2-1/4 lengths under Mike Smith. Country Grammer was clearly second best at a distance shorter than his best. Stiletto Boy held 3rd over late running Mandaloun. The order of finish was completed by Parnelli, Tripoli, Defunded, Senor Buscador, and There Goes Harvard. The final time for 8.5f was 1:42.75. The top two finishers are logical threats in the Pacific Classic (G1) later in the meet, and Country Grammer should love the 10f distance. Defunded is worth playing back when he shows up again.

July 30 Claims: Race 1 – Cortese ($62.5k, Mike Maker), Top of My Game ($62.5k, Steve Knapp). Race 4 – Blame George ($32k, Adan Farias), Eleniak ($32k, Cesar DeAlba). Race 5 – Explain This Audit ($55k, Craig Dollase). Race 7 – Commander ($80k, Hector Palma). Race 9 – Shadrack ($40k, Tim Yakteen).

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $474,327, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $7,782.74. The jackpot carryover stands at $393,250.

Del Mar Full Card Highlights for Saturday (7-30-22)

SAR 9 EPICENTER ($4.20) – Dr. Atlas

Del Mar Recap for Sunday (7-31-22)

Fast main track and firm turf course. One front running winner at 5.5f on dirt. Pressers won three races, and a stalker and a closer captured the remaining two main track races. The other two dirt winners pounced from 2nd. On the turf course, a front running 2yo graduated at 8f, a midpack closer graduated at 8f, a 9-1 stalker from post 12 scored at 8f, 16-1 longshot Master Piece (CHI) rallied from the outside post to take the G2 Eddie Read at 9f, and a 10-1 closer ended the card with a win at 8f (rail at 12 feet).

Juan Hernandez booted home the first three winners on the Sunday card. Bob Baffert saddled the early double and Hernandez rode both. Peter Miller saddled two winners as well.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 7-31-22

Eddie Read (G2): Beyond Brilliant looked like the controlling speed on paper, but Juan Hernandez aboard Masteroffoxhounds was having none of that. He went to the lead from the inside post and took the race to Beyond Brilliant. The latter had to work hard to get to the front and he never got a breather, and none of the forwardly placed runners were around at the end. Master Piece (CHI) got a bit of a better draw after two scratches (Tarantino, There Goes Harvard), and he rallied from the outside post to score by an easy 3-1/4 lengths at 16-1 odds. He paid $34.20 for Abel Cedillo and Michael McCarthy. Hong Kong Harry sat in midpack and rallied for the place, and my value top choice Cathkin Peak closed from last and just grabbed the show over Homer Screen (BRZ), Masteroffoxhounds, and Beyond Brilliant. The order of finish was completed by Tango Tango Tango, Cash Equity (FR), Ecrivain (FR), and King Cause. The final time for 9f on turf was 1:46.25.

July 31 Claims: Race 4 – Bonita Leona ($16k, Milton Pineda), Drizella ($14k, Eddie Truman), Hillstone Martini ($16k, Milton Pineda). Race 6 – Duplication ($50k, Mark Glatt), Thirsty Cowboy ($50k, Bob Hess Jr.). Race 10 – Fenestra ($32k, Jonathan Wong), Handsome Cat ($32k, Robertino Diodoro), I’m Corfu ($32k, Isidro Tamayo), Molto Vivace ($32k, Brian T. Cunningham), Octopus ($32k, Robertino Diodoro), Senor Jobim ($32k, Jonathan Wong), Slam Dunk Sermon ($32k, Robertino Diodoro).

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $447,604, and nobody had six winners. Multiple tickets with five winners paid $7,713.54. The jackpot carryover stands at $495,730. You rarely see these 20 cent Pick 6 wagers pay on less than six winners. Del Mar has been highly competitive with large fields, and the Pick 6 has now paid on five winners twice during the first seven days of the current summer meet.

Del Mar Full Card Highlights for Sunday (7-31-22)
DMR 1 JACKSTOWN ($8.20), Trifecta ($45.60)
Double (races 1-2, $10.80)
Pick 3 (races 1-3, $62.40)
SAR 9 GUNITE ($16.80) – Dr. Atlas

*Full card highlights based on $2 wagers unless otherwise noted.
