Mizdirection (6.5T hillside): Freedom Flyer set the pace but could not keep the rhythm going, and she faded out of contention. Surface switcher Elm Drive ($13.40) chased from second, took over when the pacesetter weakened, and was clear by a length and a quarter at the wire. Ramon Vazquez rode the winner for Phil D’Amato, and she beat her stablemate Honey Pants in this spot. The latter rallied to finish a solid second from the inside post and beaten favorite Big Summer was best of the rest in third. Very Scary, Una Chiquitita (CHI), Canoodling, and Freedom Flyer also ran. The final time was 1:13.23.
The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $143,854, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $888.66. The jackpot carryover stands at $171,863.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 5-21-23
Desert Code (6.5T hillside): There was not much pace in the paper race. I was hoping recent maiden winner Acquired Class would be able to impact the pace at a price, but he stalked wide and never made a serious impact. The smart money came in on Conclude ($5.40). He scooted to the front under Juan Hernandez and just held off post time favorite First Peace to score by a nose. Ransomware was the longest shot on the board and he came running for the show. Mas Rapido (GB), Valiancer, and Acquired Class completed the order of finish. Phil D’Amato saddled the winner and the final time was 1:11.25.
The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $128,688, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $5,988.52. The jackpot carryover stands at $201,326.
