Santa Anita Recap for Saturday (1-27-24)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Front runners won all four races on dirt (8f, 5.5f, 8.5f, 9f). On the turf course, a 12-1 front running first timer graduated in the 6f opener, an 8-1 stalker scored at 6.5f, a 2-1 closer earned his diploma at one mile, a 9-1 front runner tallied down the hill, and a stalking favorite scored at 3-2 odds in the flat mile finale.

Riding double for Juan Hernandez.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 1-27-24

Grade 2 San Pasqual (9f): Newgrange was the fourth and final wire-to-wire winner on a speed favoring main track on Saturday. He stalked and scored in this event last year, and in this edition, he stayed between a half-length and a length in front throughout, and he beat stalker Newgate by a length. Mixto broke from the outside post and chased from 2nd, dropped back to 4th in the stretch, and found another gear and was gaining at the end in a solid show finish. Two Rivers saved ground behind the speed and ended up 4th. My top choice Mr Fisk never had a chance. He raced wide every step of the way and finished a clear 5th. I’mgonnabesomebody and Stilleto Boy trailed. Victor Espinoza rode the winner for trainer Phil D’Amato, and the final time was 1:49.26. Newgrange is now 5-for-7 at SA.

The $1 Pick 6 pool was $119,532 and multiple tickets with six winners paid $3,756.30. The 5 out of 6 consolation prize was $55.10.

Jan. 27 Claims: Race 2 – Magazine ($16k, Leonard Powell). Race 4 – Dorie Miller ($32k, Jorge Periban).

Santa Anita Recap for Sunday (1-28-24)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running winners on dirt (8f, 6f). The other two main track winners chased from 2nd. It was tough for closers to make up ground, and that makes back-to-back speed friendly days to end the month. On the turf course, a 5-2 closer got up to graduate by a nose in the flat mile opener, a front running favorite earned her diploma at one mile, a dueling front runner scored at 6f, a last-to-first closer won the Clocker’s Corner on the downhill course at 19-1 odds, and a front running favorite broke her maiden in the 6.5f finale (rail at 10 feet).

Joel Rosario guided home two winners on the main track. Antonio Fresu and Doug O’Neill teamed up for a pair of turf sprint wins.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 1-28-24

Clocker’s Corner (6.5T hillside): My 4.40-1 top choice Mucho Del Oro lost a heartbreaker. He was briefly in front early from the inside post, but Juan Hernandez backed off when Hamwood Flier (IRE) rushed up under Victor Espinoza. The latter carved out splits of 21.43 and 43.64. Mucho Del Oro eased out and came after Hamwood Flier again, and he stuck the front and opened up by 2 lengths. I thought he was home free, but Irideo (ARG) was flying late under Jeremy Laprida and got up in the final strides to win by a nose. Mucho Del Oro ran too good to lose and was a length and a half clear of show finisher Sumter. Daniel’s Magic, Hamwood Flier, Johnny Podres, I’m a Gambler (IRE), and Standing O also ran. The winner stopped the clock in 1:12.12 and paid $40.60.

The $1 Pick 6 pool was $139,132 and nobody had all six winners. Multiple tickets with five winners paid $2,123.60. There will be a Pick 6 carryover of $74,329 when live racing resumes on Friday.

Jan. 28 Claims: Race 5 – Man Overboard ($25k, Mark Glatt). Race 8 – Sherlyn Go Go ($12.5k, Ed Moger Jr).
