Santa Anita Recap for Saturday (2-17-24)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running sprint winners on dirt (7f, 5.5f). On the turf course, a dueling front runner captured the 9f opener at 6-1 odds, a closing favorite got up by a nose at 6f, a midpack closing favorite graduated at one mile, a last-to-first closing favorite captured the Baffle Stakes by a head on the downhill course, and a 6-1 stalker earned his diploma in the flat mile finale.

Riding doubles for Hector Berrios and Juan Hernandez (turf). Phil D’Amato saddled two turf winners and Hernandez rode both.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 2-17-24

Baffle Stakes (6.5T hillside): I thought my top choice Heart Headed had this one. He stalked the pace from the inside post, took the lead in the lane, and was nailed on the line by closing favorite Stay Hot. The latter was last of seven for a half mile or so under Antonio Fresu, and he moved out in the stretch and mowed down my top choice. Heart Headed was clearly second best and Charge for Gold battled on the pace and held the show over Final Boss. Hedwig, Boltage, and Always On Cay also ran. The final time was 1:13.04.

The $1 Pick 6 pool was $493,978 and multiple tickets with six winners paid $1,941.80. The 5 out of 6 consolation prize was $35.10.

Feb. 17 Claims: Race 6 – California Tiger ($32k, Hector Palma). Race 8 – Oil Can Knight ($12.5k, Tim Abraham), Patron d’Oro ($12.5k, Jesus Mendoza).

Santa Anita Recap for Sunday (2-18-24)

Fast main track and firm turf course. One front running winner at one mile on dirt. On the turf course, a last-to-first closer beat four rivals as the longest shot at 8-1 odds in the Mcl-50k opener at 9f, a stalking favorite scored at one mile, a closing favorite graduated at 6.5f, and a ground saving midpack stalker graduated as the favorite in the flat mile finale (rail at 10 feet).

Hat trick for Frankie Dettori (2 dirt sprints).

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 2-18-24

Spring Fever (CA-bred, 6f): Daddysruby made the lead as expected by my top choice Big Pond was breathing down her neck. The latter was bet down to even money under Frankie Dettori, and she pressed, surged to the lead, and was clearly best by three lengths. Scary Fast Ride stalked the pace and ran on for the place, and Daddysruby was best of the rest in third. Rose Maddox, All Dialed In, and Rose Dawson also ran. The final time was 1:09.28.

The $1 Pick 6 pool was $149,166 and multiple tickets with six winners paid $574.70. The 5 out of 6 consolation prize was $16.70.
