Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 3-8-25

Grade 1 Beholder Mile (8T): Richi (CHI) set the pace from the inside post and her stablemate Cavalieri chased from second. Baffert’s two favorites controlled proceedings throughout. Cavalieri ($4.20) gradually wore down Richi and scored by 3/4ths of a length. Richi finished 5 3/4 lengths in front of my value top choice Tarifa. The latter stalked wide under Mike Smith and was best of the rest in third. Hoosier Philly stalked inside and held off Alpha Bella for fourth, and 18-1 outsider Ultimate Authority trailed. Juan Hernandez rode the winner for Bob Baffert. Fractions: 22.56, 46.24, 1:09.73, 1:22.32, 1:34.96.

Grade 3 San Simeon (6.5T hillside): 27-1 longshot Lovesick Blues was the inside speed and my top choice Mucho Del Oro battled outside and looked to be in a good spot turning for home, but the latter surprisingly threw in the towel as the beaten favorite. Air Force Red ($11.80) sat back, pounced in the lane, and won by a length over clear runner-up finisher Lovesick Blues. Sorrento Sky rallied to finish a clear third. St Anthony, Anarchist, Mucho Del Oro, and Charge for Gold also ran. Armando Ayuso rode the winner for Leonard Powell. Fractions: 21.64, 43.78, 1;06.95, 1:12.99.
