The 2026 Breeders’ Cup World Championships got off to an exciting start at Keeneland on Friday, October 30, with five championship races showcasing some of the best two-year-olds in North America and Europe. Future Stars Friday featured a mix of impressive turf performances, a major dirt victory for Bob Baffert, and a historic milestone for trainer Aidan O’Brien.
Libertango, Emphatic, Sun Goddess, Hughes and Haffner emerged as Friday’s five Breeders’ Cup winners. O’Brien captured two races, while Baffert added another important victory to his remarkable Breeders’ Cup record.
Libertango Opens the Championship Action
The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint kicked off the championship races with a strong performance from Libertango. Ridden by Billy Loughnane and trained by George Boughey, the filly rallied from mid-pack and powered past her rivals to win by 1¼ lengths.
Libertango had to navigate traffic before finding room in the stretch. She responded when clear and finished strongly, rewarding her backers as the 9-5 favorite. Hell of a Spin finished second, while Mussab was elevated to third after an inquiry resulted in Harper’s Corner being disqualified and placed eighth.
Emphatic Delivers in the Juvenile Fillies
Emphatic gave trainer Brendan Walsh and jockey Tyler Gaffalione a major championship victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.
Emphatic chased from second, took over and opened up, and held off a troubled Miss Monica to score by a diminishing length and a half.
Miss Monica bumped with Rum Twist at the start, and she rallied through traffic in a clear runner-up finish, with Manuka Honey taking third.
Fractions: 22.54, 45.87, 1:11.21, 1:35.88, 1:42.29.
Sun Goddess Gives O’Brien His First Friday Win
Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore teamed up for the first of their two Friday victories when Sun Goddess captured the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.
Sun Goddess entered the race with considerable expectations and delivered a winning performance as the favorite. She tracked the place while in the clear and kicked clear to win by 3 lengths as the strong favorite. Green Empress finished second, followed by Curracloe in third. My top choice Amusingly broke 12th and came running for fourth in a respectable effort.
The victory added another Breeders’ Cup victory to O’Brien’s record and set the stage for an even bigger finish to his Friday.
Hughes Stays Unbeaten in the Juvenile
Hughes delivered one of the afternoon’s most impressive dirt performances in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
Trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Flavien Prat, Hughes continued his unbeaten campaign with a 2¼-length victory. American History finished second, with Salahudin third.
Hughes pressed longshot Damavand, turned away a bid from Coach Pope, and held off American History and Salahudin to win by 2 1/4 lengths. The win kept his record perfect through five starts and strengthened his position as the leading juvenile in the land.
It was also Baffert’s 22nd Breeders’ Cup victory and his seventh win in the Juvenile.
Fractions: 23.36, 46.65, 1:10.86, 1:35.98, 1:42.27.
Haffner Closes Friday with a Historic Victory
The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf provided a fitting conclusion to Future Stars Friday. Haffner delivered for O’Brien and Moore, winning by 1¾ lengths. He stalked from post 3 and got the jump on race favorite Folsome Blues. The latter broke 12th from post 9 and rallied for the place, a nose in front of front runner Avec Toi.
The victory gave O’Brien his second Breeders’ Cup win of the afternoon and the 23rd of his career. That moved him ahead of Baffert for the all-time Breeders’ Cup training victory record after Baffert had earlier reached 22.
Moore was aboard both of O’Brien’s Friday winners, completing a memorable afternoon for the trainer-jockey combination.
