The 2026 Breeders’ Cup World Championships reached their exciting conclusion at Keeneland on Saturday, October 31, with nine championship races and a noteworthy performance in the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic.
The biggest headline belonged to Sovereignty, who returned to the Breeders’ Cup after missing last year’s Classic and delivered a decisive victory for trainer Bill Mott and jockey Junior Alvarado. But there were plenty of other memorable performances throughout the afternoon, including a thrilling photo finish from Further Ado, a strong Distaff victory by Nitrogen and another major international turf success for Aidan O’Brien.
Ways and Means Opens Saturday with a BC Victory
Ways and Means got Saturday’s championship action started with a convincing victory in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.
Trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Flavien Prat, Ways and Means delivered another outstanding performance. She sat in midpack from post 2, found running room and burst away in the stretch to win by 6 1/4 lengths as the favorite. She secured her first victory outside New York and gave Brown his first of two Breeders’ Cup winners on the Saturday card.
Explora attempted to challenge around the final turn, but Prat kept Ways and Means focused through the stretch. She pulled away to secure the win, and Foie Gras outfinished Explora for the place. Kilwin rallied from far back to finish fourth. The final time for seven panels was 1:21.76.
Bacio Takes the Turf Sprint
Wesley Ward added another Breeders’ Cup victory when Bacio captured the Turf Sprint under Juan Hernandez.
Bacio entered the race in excellent form, having won four straight and five of his previous six starts. He maintained control for much of the race, and Hernandez timed his move perfectly. He spurted well clear turning for home and easily held off the late run of Cy Fair to win by 2 lengths.
Bacio stopped the clock in 1:02.11 and paid $6.36 as the second betting choice. The victory also gave Hernandez his first Breeders’ Cup win.
Further Ado Wins a Thrilling Dirt Mile Photo Finish
One of the afternoon’s most exciting finishes came in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.
Further Ado, trained by Brad Cox and ridden by Flavien Prat, battled Owen Almighty through the stretch in a dramatic finish. The two horses reached the wire together, but Further Ado prevailed by a nose.
The victory was especially satisfying at Keeneland, where Further Ado remained undefeated in three starts. He paid $4.02 as the betting favorite and completed his one mile journey in 1:34.50.
It was also his final race before retiring to stud, making the dramatic championship finish an appropriate conclusion to his racing career.
Kathynmarissa Delivers for Chad Brown
Kathynmarissa produced a strong late run to capture the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf for trainer Chad Brown and jockey Jose Ortiz.
The filly is known for her closing ability, and she needed every bit of that late kick to get the job done. She stayed within striking range throughout, and Ortiz found room in the stretch and ran down Gimme a Nother to win by 3/4ths of a length. The latter got a great inside run in the stretch but could not hold off the deserving winner.
Kathynmarissa completed her 1 3/16 miles jaunt in 1:53.75 and paid $13.24.
T O Elvis Wins the Breeders’ Cup Sprint
T O Elvis delivered a major international victory in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.
Trained by Daisuke Takayanagi and ridden by Ryusei Sakai, the Japanese runner produced a strong late effort to catch Englishman, who had opened up a sizable advantage in the stretch.
Englishman appeared to be in control, but the early pace may have taken its toll. T O Elvis came charging from the outside and got up to win by a length and a quarter.
The victory was particularly impressive considering T O Elvis had been away from the races for more than five months.
Three-year-old colt Englishman ran a winning race from post 13. The post time favorite chased Liam Smith through lively fractions of 21.68 and 44.42. He took over, opening up by 3 lengths and was run down late. Liam Smith held the show by a neck over Hymn.
T O Elvis ran six furlongs in 1:08.20 and paid $7.58 to win.
Deterministic Gives Miguel Clement a Special Victory
Deterministic captured the Breeders’ Cup Mile, giving trainer Miguel Clement his first Breeders’ Cup victory.
Ridden by Kendrick Carmouche, Deterministic saved ground tracking the pace from the inside post and waited for the right opportunity. Once clear in the stretch, he accelerated, opened up by 3 lengths and held off the late challenge from defending champion Notable Speech.
Notable Speech may have been best. He did not have the smoothest trip while racing in traffic, and he fanned wide in the lane and settled for the place. Lake Forest rallied for the show.
The victory was an emotional milestone for Clement and his family. Following the passing of his father, trainer Christophe Clement, Miguel had continued the family racing operation and delivered a Breeders’ Cup victory.
Nitrogen Shows Her Class in the Distaff
Nitrogen produced another impressive performance in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff for trainer Mark Casse and jockey Jose Ortiz.
The filly tracked the pace from third and was never more than 3 lengths off the two early leaders. Ortiz remained patient and brought her into contention around the turn, and she was joined by Fully Subscribed.
Nitrogen eventually battled with Fully Subscribed in the stretch, drifted out and proved too strong late. She won by 2 lengths and paid $3.58.
Fully Subscribed was clearly second best and Measure rallied to edge Super Corredora for show honors. The final time was 1:48.90.
Nitrogen’s victory continued an extraordinary record of consistency. She had never finished worse than third in 18 career starts entering the race.
Benvenuto Cellini Gives Europe a Turf Championship
Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore teamed up for yet another Grade 1 victory in the Breeders’ Cup Turf with Benvenuto Cellini.
Moore saved ground and kept the colt in the middle of the pack early, then waited for an opening as the field approached the stretch. He eventually found room between rivals and drove Benvenuto Cellini through the gap.
The colt responded with a strong finish, defeating Map of Stars, with Diamond Necklace also finishing in the top three.
The victory continued Europe’s strong record in the Breeders’ Cup Turf and gave O’Brien his 24th championship success.
Benvenuto Cellini completed a mile and a half in 2:27.50 and rewarded his backers with $8.52 as the betting favorite.
Sovereignty Caps the Day with a Classic Performance
The $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic provided the perfect finish to Saturday’s championship action.
Sovereignty, trained by Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott and ridden by Junior Alvarado, delivered a powerful performance to win the 1¼-mile race by 1¾ lengths over The Puma. Knightsbridge finished third.
The big disappointment was Forever Young. The betting favorite chased the pace but never looked comfortable. He failed to make a serious impact in the lane and missed fourth by a nose in a flat effort. That was the first time he finished out of the trifecta in his career.
Sovereignty settled behind the early pace set by stablemate Knightsbridge before beginning his move around the final turn. Alvarado guided him into contention, and the four-year-old colt accelerated through the stretch to take control.
The victory was especially meaningful because Sovereignty had been expected to compete in the 2025 Classic but was forced to miss the race after developing a fever.
He returned to the championship stage in 2026 and made the most of the opportunity.
The win added another major accomplishment to Sovereignty’s already impressive resume, which includes victories in the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, Travers Stakes and Whitney.
For Mott, it was his third Breeders’ Cup Classic victory, following earlier wins with Cigar and Drosselmeyer.
Sovereignty paid $5.94 to win and completed the 1¼-mile distance in 2:00.36 over a fast track.
